Wine Talk: embracing a casual approach

In a recent interview, Christy Canterbury, MW, shared an insightful perspective: “Many wine brands tend to overload their messaging with technical details—such as yeast, production techniques, exposure, and soil type—that most consumers aren’t interested in. What most people really care about is the lifestyle associated with wine, the pleasure of its consumption, and how wine can make their lives more interesting. I believe it is necessary to adapt to today’s more casual lifestyle.”

Is she onto something? The way sommeliers talk about wine often mirrors the complexity of wine itself—rich with detail but sometimes overwhelming. Maybe it’s time for a change to keep up with how people want to learn about wine today.

While I find myself agreeing with Canterbury’s view, it’s also true that the essence of wine lies in both its nuances and the intricacies of its making. However, could a fresher, casual approach to wine communication engage a broader audience more effectively? Maybe we need to freshen up our approach and make wine talk more accessible.
